The use of spirit houses in Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia predates the arrival of Hinduism and Buddhism into the region. Spirit houses are still commonly seen outside houses, offices, and temples throughout Southeast Asia. These spirit houses are believed to be dwelling places for the spirits of the deceased, and offerings are placed before them each morning by devout Buddhists, Hindus, and Animists.
